Chapter Eleven

Something caught my hair, jerking me upright. I screamed, my legs and arms kicking wildly as though that would slow my descent. The wind whipped around me, dragging me toward the rocks below the cliff.

Desperately, I dredged the flickering fires up inside of me and spewed them out of my mouth. Weak orange flames heated the air around me. My wings snapped open to either side and I beat the air, trying desperately to give myself enough leverage to slow. Don’t fight the wind. Soar with it.

I forced my wings out straight to either side of me. Scales burst along my skin, but that was as far as the transformation went. I caught the wind in my wings, letting me glide the rest of the way to the canyon floor. I hit the ground hard, tumbling over myself. Pain blossomed through my shoulder and I lay there, stunned, scrapes and bruises stinging.

Against the sky, so bright blue it hurt to look at, ribbons of red and gold spurted into the air. My father’s reddish-brown dragon form, glistening in the sunlight, leapt from the balcony. There was no rush and fear in his decent. He angled himself downward and brought his wings into his sides, diving straight for me.

He was going to kill me. He had just tried to kill me and now he was angry that he had failed. He was going to dash me against the rocks again and again until my bones broke, and my guts spilled out. Because I was pregnant, and that meant his reign as king would end soon.

It was instinct more than a desire to live that drove me to my feet. Pain lanced through my shoulder and my feet stumbled over the uneven ground as I headed for the cliff walls. There was a crevice in the stone. If I got there, maybe he wouldn’t be able to grab me. I heard the whistling wind of his bombing toward me. I threw myself into the crevice just as he swooped up, claws outstretched.

He rammed against the side of the wall, letting out an earthly howl. I pressed myself deeper, panting as I forced my body through spaces that felt too small. My clothes tore, my skin felt like it was being sandpapered off, but I kept going.

Father shifted to his human form to press in after me. His shouts of fury rang in my ears, over and over again. My heart pounded against my ears as I kept pushing myself. Then, everything seemed to stop as I got stuck. My belly pressed against the rock wall, already squished back into my abdomen as far as it would go. Though I yanked my whole body sideways, I couldn’t go any further. I was stuck and Father was going to catch me and—

But Father wasn’t there. I could see a light somewhere in the distance and his head moving this way and that. He was back several yards, unwilling to attempt to push his way deeper into the crevice.
